Another day, another annoyance. Actually, this annoyed me yesterday, but I didn't feel like writing about it. I was THAT pissed off. (If you want to read my thoughts about a possible DC Comics Conspiracy, read post below this).
Before I get to my rant, I'd like to chat about a couple of other nonsensical things.
I watched the "Captain America: The First Avenger" trailer and it looks like it will be a good movie. I know almost nothing about Captain America, so there's no chance I'll be worrying about mistakes and stuff. I love Hugo Weaving! Chris Evans looks freaky at the start of the movie, his body is so small and his head doesn't match. Or is it just me? Hey, did I ever tell you guys that when I heard the announcement that they'd cast Chris Evans in the lead role, my first thought was "Really? Billie Piper's ex-husband? He's British, a redhead and way too old". Ha! (It's a different Chris Evans).
Looking at the titles DC is putting out this Fall, I saw that the Blackhawks are back in the line-up. Again, I know very little about them, but have always been interested. I think I'll either have to read-up on some back issues or do some research before the books hit the shelves. Even though it's going to be set in modern times instead of during World War II, with all the titles I'm planning on dropping, that would be a neat one to add.
Okay, it's time for my rant (how many of you were looking forward to this?!!??):
As it's summer and I am usually on their website least once a day, I was on the Comic Con site looking for SDCC updates and I saw they updated the registration page. I thought:
"Hey, great! Now I'll be able to see when I can get a Saturday pass".
<Scoff> I'm so naive! Turns out that they're going to put 1,500 4-day passes on sale at an undetermined time on an undetermined date. They're also going to give people one hours notice via social networking sites and their own website. So if you're not online at the right time, you're fucked. To a point, this doesn't affect me since I don't need a 4-day pass, so my anger is on behalf of all those people who need to get one. But it does affect me a little. I'll get to that in a bit.
A HILARIOUS aspect of all this that they are trying to convince people that they're listening to the complaints of the common convention goer and want to help.... but the one thing they're changing is the one thing they can make money on. Get this - apparently people were complaining that the 4-day passes were selling out first because people who didn't really intend on going to all four days were buying them because they were discounted (which is bullshit). So, SDCC has decided to add up the amounts of the single day tickets and put the 4-day passes up for that amount. So not only did you get screwed out of a 4-day pass when they went on sale the first four times, you're getting fucked again, IF you're able to get a pass during this on sale.
"Hey Nerd, you couldn't manage to buy a pass after four tries? Well, here's another chance and if you're not too much of a loser and actually get one, we're gonna charge you more than every one of the winners who got them at the other on-sales. Welcome to Comic Con 2011!!! #winning"
Now, here is how it affects me: A really cool thing they're doing is that they're putting the single-day passes up for sale AFTER the 4-day passes have gone on sale and sold-out, so now I have to compete with the people who didn't get 4-day passes (up to five helpings of failure for them!) when I try for a Saturday pass. Come on! Who is planning this thing, 5th graders? Have these people ever worked on a convention before, ever? It's ridiculous. All I want is one stinking pass and I don't want to get stuck online for 11 hours only to get bumped off and end-up empty-handed.
I guess I'll resign myself to the fact that I'm not going to get a Saturday pass, so my plan for this year will be me going down Thursday morning, attending Thursday and Friday, checking out of my hotel Saturday morning and taking the train home, MAYBE driving back down early Sunday morning if there's something good on the program schedule. Chances of me going back down are slim though, so that will be more wasted money on a wasted pass.
Side Note - I think it's interesting that the only comic-related website I saw that carried a story on the passes going on sale is Bleeding Cool (in the UK). Nothing on Newsarama, Superherohype or Comic Book Resources, unless I missed them.... which is entirely possible. Maybe they've gotten together and decided against publicising it so that fewer people have to compete? It would be very cool if that was the reason.
I'll probably blog more later.....
